Why Your Missed-Call Text-Back Isn't Sending: The 10DLC Registration Trap

Missed-call text-back is one of the simplest automations a service business can run: a call goes unanswered, and a text goes out within seconds. But it has a dependency most owners never hear about until it breaks. The text has to be accepted by the carriers, and for business texting from a regular local number, that means A2P 10DLC registration. If your text-back "isn't working," this is the first thing to check.

What 10DLC Is, in Plain English

A2P 10DLC stands for application-to-person, 10-digit long code. It is the system US carriers use for business texts sent by software from a standard local phone number. Registration goes through a central registry via your texting provider: you register your business (the "brand") and describe what you will send (the "campaign").

What Happens If You Skip It

Twilio's changelog states: "All unregistered messages bound for the U.S. from +1 10DLC numbers are blocked starting September 1st., 2023." Its error documentation describes error 30034 ("US A2P 10DLC - Message from an Unregistered Number") and notes that messaging rates still apply even when messages are blocked. In other words, you can pay for texts that never arrive, and the missed caller simply hears nothing.

Twilio's docs list the documented causes of 30034:

  • The number is not associated with an approved A2P 10DLC campaign.
  • Your brand or campaign registration is not complete yet.
  • The number is not in the sender pool of the Messaging Service linked to your approved campaign.
  • Several 10DLC numbers were added to a Sole Proprietor campaign (only one number is allowed).

That is Twilio specifically. Other texting platforms differ in details, but all rely on the same carrier registry.

Why Registrations Get Rejected

Provider guides (these are vendor blog posts, not carrier rulebooks, so treat them as practical experience) commonly cite the same rejection reasons:

  • Legal business name, EIN, and website domain don't match.
  • A vague campaign description that doesn't say what you send, to whom, and how people opt in.
  • Sample messages that don't match the stated use case.
  • Missing or unreachable Terms of Service or Privacy Policy pages.

Typical guidance is also that every message identifies the business, honors STOP immediately, and answers HELP. A missed-call text-back is a good fit for a clean registration: one clear use case, such as "reply to customers who called us and we missed it."

How Long and How Much

One provider guide quotes about 5 to 7 business days for most applications, longer if extra review is needed. Fees and per-message costs differ across providers, and published figures conflict between sources, so we're not quoting a number here. Ask your provider for its current registration and monthly campaign fees before you commit.

A Practical Checklist for Owners

  1. Ask where your text-back sends from. A local 10-digit number, a toll-free number, or a short code each follow different rules.
  2. Confirm registration status. Your provider should be able to show an approved brand and campaign.
  3. Make business details consistent. Same legal name, EIN, and website everywhere.
  4. Publish your privacy policy and terms on your site, and say how people consent to texts.
  5. Send a real test. Call your own line from a phone on a different carrier and let it ring out. Confirm the text arrives.

Limits of This Post

We drew on Twilio's own documentation for the blocking and error details, and on provider guides for timelines and rejection patterns. Rules, enforcement, and fees change, and carriers and providers set their own details. This is not legal advice; consent requirements for texting are governed by federal and state law, so have an attorney review your opt-in language.
